With the temperatures dropping into the single digits, we would like to remind residents to take appropriate precautions to avoid freezing pipes. Steps you can take to minimize your chances of pipes freezing are:
Make sure crawlspace vents are covered and insulated.
Cover and insulate outside faucets.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow heat in.
If you plan to be away from home, leave the heat on and leave a small stream of cold water running in your sinks. Even a trickle can help keep your pipes from freezing.
If you encounter a pipe burst, call the City immediately at 509-246-1211 ext. 3, and request to have your water shut off. Please DO NOT attempt to turn the main line off on your own. If you need to have your water shut off after normal business hours (Monday through Thursday, 9am – 4pm), please call the non-emergent M.A.C.C. number 509-762-1160.
Please share the following resources and winter tips with neighbors and anyone that may be in need. If you know of more warming resources, please let the City know so we can add that to this post. Thank you!
Winter Tips:
Be careful with portable heater placement and follow instructions to avoid accidental fires.
Do NOT use generators or combustable fuel heaters indoors. UL approved stoves and fireplaces should be maintained for performance and safety. Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
Prepare your vehicle with a check on anti-freeze and oil, use snow tires, and keep water, food, and blankets in the vehicle.
Be prepared for power outages and call Grant PUD 800-216-5226 to report a power outage.
